Buffalo, wild horses, and animals roamed the area which was path through which native Indians settled. The abundance of buffalo and wild game provide superb hunting as the Indians thrived, always keeping an eye out for their enemies. In 1838, the Congress of Texas authorized a trail from the Red River to Austin. The Shawnee Trail was chosen, and by 1850, the path was used by settlers to bring supplies to their new homes in Texas. Cattle drives also became part of the Shawnee Trail, as cattle were driven into Oklahoma and Missouri.
