Schertz Fire Rescue was established in 1956, and its Police Department is headed by Chief of Police Steve Starr (2010). The Schertz public Library was established in 1978 and had been in operation for over 30 years. They operate in a 9,000 sq feet building with over 53,000 collections and counting. The city maintains park land of over 200 acres complete with equipments and facilities. Some of the recreational centers include a ball field complex, a public pool, a soccer complex, lighted basketball courts, pavilions and many others. The city also has a 7,000 sq ft. Civic Center in Parkway used for receptions and other social events.
