Found within the city of Dallas are several great small cities that have been incorporated through time. One such small city is found in the area of Dallas that belongs to Ellis County, and is Ovilla, Texas. The city is found on the upper end of Red Oak Creek, and is the oldest town in the entire county. With a start in 1844, Ovilla was a fortified settlement, which grew as the new settlers began to arrive for attendance in brush arbor meetings held by the Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian …
The church held these meetings until 1853, at which time a log cabin to serve as Ovilla’s schoolhouse and church, was constructed. This church is credited with the movement of Trinity University to the seat of the county, Waxahachie, during 1902, as well as the establishment of an all girls’ school within Milford close by.
The town remained a thriving farming area throughout the 1800’s, after which there was a great deal of change and declination of growth, until Dallas began to grow feeding the growth of Ovilla as well.
What brings most attention to the city is the shooting of many “Walker, Texas Ranger” episodes which took place in the city itself.
