Founded in 1873, the area has since grown and prospered as a farming community that has crop of corn, cotton, hay, and sugar, using railroad transportation for exportation. However, after WWII, there was great growth in the suburban element of Mesquite, with a population growth from 1,696 in 1950 to 55,131 by 1970.
