First let’s start out with a few simple facts about the lone star’s state most famous city, Dallas:

1.       Dallas is the 3rd Largest City in the State of Texas and the 9th Largest in the US

2.       According to the 2010 Census Bureau it is home to 1.2 million Americans

3.       It’s Gross metroplex economy is the sixth largest in the United States

4.       Dallas Unemployment rate is 8.7% which is below the national average

Just these four economic factors are enough to say that the Dallas is a booming city with a healthy economy.  But we need to factor in a few more things.  Dallas is home to some of the most famous and profitable sporting franchises in the world.  It boasts the Dallas Cowboys, America’s Team.  According to Forbes magazine the Dallas Cowboys are the second most valuable sporting franchise in the world.  The only sporting franchise more valuable is the fabled Manchester United Football Club.  Dallas is also home to the Dallas Mavericks which were the 2011 NBA World Champions led by the NBA finals MVP, Dirk Nowitzki.  And of course Dallas is home to the 2010 and 2011 World Series contenders the Texas Rangers whose legendary owner and GM, Nolan Ryan is relentless in his pursuit for a MLB title.

Dallas is also home to a vibrant and expanding Tourist destination.  Dallas has many interesting and unique points of interest that keep tourist piling in to the Dallas/Fort Worth area daily.  Some of these points of interest are the Dallas World Aquarium, the Dallas Zoo, Six Flags over Texas, The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza and Museum of Nature & Science.  Dallas also contains a world renown shopping hub, an enthusiastic nightlife and is becoming a Mecca for fine dining and innovative cuisine.

The Silicon Prairie

As mentioned, Dallas is home to fantastic sporting teams and is an interesting tourist destination but it is also a business center juggernaut.  Texas has always been a place that has encouraged financial growth, the spirit of enterpeneurship and innovative free trade and business development.   Dallas is home to some of the world’s most innovative and successful companies.  It is home to Texas Instruments which is an electronic magnate for the last six decades.  It is the home to the main headquarters of Verizon Communications, Sprint, Nortel Networks, and Cisco.  Dallas has labeled the "Silicon Prairie" because of its concentration of technologic companies.  And these are just a few of the companies that are based in Dallas, Texas.

Dallas Real Estate – Desirable & Positive

These three factors, Tourism, Sporting and Business are part of the algorithms that help determine the overall happiness of a city or an area but they also can play a factor in how an area’s real estate is valued and how it is developing or shrinking.  Dallas is home to some of the finest and most desirable real estate in the country.   It has beautiful single family homes in quaint residential neighborhoods.  It has wonderful high rise condos that have the most luxurious amenities available.  It has lush golf and country club communities that offer wonderful landscaped golf courses and state of the art tennis facilities and it has the exquisite mansions and luxurious estates.  With the three “quality of life” factors being so positive and the amount of desirable real estate available in the Dallas area, one would believe that the Dallas Real Estate market is positive and that it could return to its glory days of 2004 when it had one of the highest growth rates in the country.

Jay @ Dallas Architects wrote: I have always said Dallas does not have very much natural beauty. But what it lacks in beauty it more than makes up for with money and jobs. This was true in the past and true today. I have lived in Dallas my whole life and I always wonder how this picture is taken. Is it when the Trinity is flooded? Because it makes it look like there is all this water near downtown, when in fact there is next to none.

We need to take a page out of Texas' economic playbook, but we won't, because, judging by their policies, our state and local governrnents would rather we emulate California. We've seen how well that turns out.
