Texas retains top ranking in high-tech job creation
Texas Real Estate News
The Texas high-technology sector continues to make job creation gains. The Lone Star State has maintained its No. 2 nationwide ranking in technology jobs, second to California and ahead of New York, said the Cyberstates 2008 study conducted for AeA, the country's largest technology trade association. Texas added 13,700 high-tech jobs for 459,600 in 2006 - the most current year for which data was available. The technology industry paid out $37.5 billion in wages in the state that year, with an average wage of $81,600, nearly 90 percent higher than the average private sector wage. By comparison, the national high technology wage that year was $79,500. The study showed that the state's fastest job growth was in the area of computer design and related services (7,200), followed by engineering services (6,700) and research and development or testing labs (1,500). Across the country, using 2007 statistics, the report said that the high-tech industry employed 5.9 million people after adding 91,400 jobs last year, sharply lower than the 139,000 jobs added in 2006 but higher than the 87,400 jobs added in 2005. Among the key findings of the report is that electronics manufacturing jobs decreased in 2007 while software and engineering jobs increased.
